This learning section is built for real beginners. We do not assume you can already read kanji, and we do not throw random phrase lists at you. Each lesson teaches Japanese in a clear format: Japanese, kana, romaji, English, plus an example and a when to use it note.

Your first five phrases

すみません。
Sumimasen.
Excuse me. / Sorry.
Example: すみません。駅はどこですか。
Sumimasen. Eki wa doko desu ka.
When to use it: To begin politely, get attention, or soften a question.
ありがとうございます。
Arigatou gozaimasu.
Thank you very much.
Example: ありがとうございます。
Arigatou gozaimasu.
When to use it: After help, service, directions, or kindness.
〜はどこですか。
~ wa doko desu ka.
Where is ~ ?
Example: トイレはどこですか。
Toire wa doko desu ka.
When to use it: For stations, exits, restrooms, hotels, and locations.
これをください。
Kore o kudasai.
This one, please.
Example: これをください。
Kore o kudasai.
When to use it: When pointing at food, drinks, tickets, or products.
もういちどおねがいします。
Mou ichido onegai shimasu.
One more time, please.
Example: すみません、もう一度お願いします。
Sumimasen, mou ichido onegai shimasu.
When to use it: When you did not hear or understand what someone said.
