In Japan, tone matters. A polite phrase can make things smoother, friendlier, and easier. For beginners, polite Japanese is not fancy Japanese. It is practical Japanese.

Five quick win polite phrases

すみません。
Sumimasen.
Excuse me. / Sorry.
Example: すみません、駅はどこですか。
Sumimasen, eki wa doko desu ka.
When to use it: To begin a question or get attention politely.
おねがいします。
Onegai shimasu.
Please.
Example: メニューをお願いします。
Menyuu o onegai shimasu.
When to use it: When asking for help, a menu, or service.
ありがとうございます。
Arigatou gozaimasu.
Thank you very much.
