Core polite phrases

すみません。

Sumimasen.

Excuse me. / Sorry.

Example: すみません、トイレはどこですか。
Sumimasen, toire wa doko desu ka.

When to use it: Before asking questions.

お願いします。

おねがいします。

Onegai shimasu.

Please.

Example: メニューをお願いします。
Menyuu o onegai shimasu.

When to use it: When asking for something politely.

ありがとうございます。

Arigatou gozaimasu.

Thank you very much.

Example: ありがとうございます。

When to use it: After help or service.
