Shopping signs: the words that make stores easier to understand.

In shops and department stores, the same useful words appear again and again: open, closed, sale, fitting room, register, and tax-free. Learn these and shopping becomes much smoother.

Five shopping signs to know first

えいぎょうちゅう
eigyouchuu
open / currently open for business
Example: 営業中
Eigyouchuu
When to use it: On doors, windows, and storefront signs.
へいてん
heiten
closed / closing
Example: 閉店しました。
Heiten shimashita.
When to use it: On stores that are closed or ending business hours.
セール
seeru
sale
Example: セール中
Seeru-chuu
When to use it: In clothing shops, malls, and department stores.
めんぜい
menzei
tax-free
Example: 免税店
Menzei-ten
When to use it: In stores offering tax-free shopping to visitors.
レジ
reji
cash register / checkout
Example: レジはこちらです。
Reji wa kochira desu.
When to use it: When looking for checkout.
